‘’Christian Art under Islamic Rule: The Balkan art historyographical tradition reconsidered in the light of Ottoman administrative sources”
The thesis: ‘’ Muslims and other religion communities were divided in ghettos.’’ In Athens the reality it is very different. (showing on the map) On the city map red are the Christian and green the Muslim monuments. For example, the tolerance for other confessions was very limited. The buildings are hidden behind other buildings. Also in other Western European countries the tolerance for other confessions was very limited.
Today, In Bonn Muslims could not construct Minaret and they painted a minaret on the wall of the building.
In the Balkans another thesis is that the churches in Middle Ages were big and glorious, but in the Ottoman time churches were small.
Sharia forbids to enlarge the existing churches. Theory: Ottoman Churches are low, deep in ground and can not be seen. But the Church of Letni Sveti Ivan is 300 meter above the valley and very good visible.
Another example in North Western Greece, in the village of Spolaita, Monastery of Lykovitsi above the Lake Ozero constructed in 1737 near a Muslim village, are very good visible.
Sharia forbids new church constructions and enlargement. But there are many examples of new constructions. For example, Mlado Nagorichane church was enlarged.
Nikolo Toplicki / Mavrovo, Macedonia, Zhelezna in Northwest Bulgaria were double enlarged.
The Kadis close the eyes and these enlargement could be carried out. From the Ottoman Tapu Tahrir registers we see how the monasteries increased their goods and revenues. For example in “Karlı İli” in Western Greece.
In Bosnia the Monastery of Moshtanica was another story and Crotian rule. Ottoman-Seljukid influence on church architecture.
In Athens the churches from the Ottoman period are larger than the churches from the Byzantine time. For example the Church of Agioi Anagry. Jashunje near Leskovac, South Serbia was built in 1499, founded by Nonne Xenia Kantakusina .
Monastery of Sv. Troica sponsored by the Sipahi Voin (Christian Sipahi). Monastery of Piva, Montenegro, erected 1573-85 by Archbishop Savatije Sokolovic, brother of Sokullu Mehmed Paşa.
Monastery of Dousiko, Western Thessaly, small Church from 1515, after an earthquake in 1545 replaced.
Monastery of Daou Panteli near Athens, built between 1572 and 1576. The plan was influenced from Mimar Sinan’s architecture.
Monastery of Tsagesi / Stomio in Eastern Thesally, church of St. Demetrios, completed in 1543. ‘’haric ez defter-i atik’’ which means it was new construction.
Monastery of Alino, Western Bulgaria. Novo Hopovo in Serbia, Backhovo in the Rhodope, south of Filibe (Plovdiv). Monastery of the Kimisis Theotokou of Renelina, Pinelos, central Greece.
Paintings in the church from 1676. Village of Ano Vathia, central Euboia. The Ottoman art and Gothic elements mixed, church of the monastery of St. Nicholas, with İznik çinisi.
As a conclusion we see that the tahrirs shows that the number of monasteries increased in every tahrir.
Discussions
K. Bitiş: Kosovadaki kiliseler Sırp eseri mi yoksa Arnavut hıristiyanların eseri mi?
M. Kiel: Serbian monuments. Albanians came there in 17th century.
M. Valyevac: What was the procedure to change the Catholic Church to Orthodox and vice versa.
M. Kiel: There are specific signs for both confessions.
Another Questions: Churches in Albania?
M.Kiel: There are plenty of examples. For example, in Northern Albania, in Southern half of Albania. Many churches and mosques were destructed with the revolution (Enver Hodxa). There were leaflets how to put down minarets.
Another Questions: Church/mosque in the Castle of Schkoder. How should it continue?
M. Kiel: Both, Church and mosque.
Questions : If there were new constructed churches in Bosnia by Bosnians in the Ottoman times.
M. Kiel: They constructed it by themselves. Good workers were imported. They acted pragmaticly. Catholic masters from Dalmatia were famous. The mosque of Focha, Alaca Cami, was built by Dalmatian masters.
Questions : Balkanlardaki İslam eserleri ve Anadoludaki hıristiyan eserlerinin tam listesi var mıdır?
M. Kiel: Anatolia is under estimated, also the publications for the Ottoman Monuments in the Balkans are not complete.
Tayfur Erdoğdu: Can you tell us some examples in Fiedlresearch?
M. Kiel: In Kumanovo I was arrested, for example. Because I took photos from Ottoman monuments.
T.Erdoğdu: Do you think to write your memories?
M.Kiel: I have an offer to go to London to sit and write.
Another Questions: Balkanlardaki eserlerin yok oluşunda etnik çekişmelerden ziyade halkın duyarsızlığı rol oynuyor. Ne yapilabilir?
M. Kiel: Televizyon programları.
